Life in Irons: Brisbane’s Convict Stories

Moreton Bay penal colony was established by the British Government to “…reinstate transportation as an object of real terror to all classes of society”. It succeeded. Life in Irons: Brisbane’s Convict Stories provides a vivid insight into daily life in the settlement using original documents, personal accounts, historical objects and contemporary art, brought to life with immersive new technologies.

Life in convict Brisbane was unrelentingly harsh for the 3,000 men and women imprisoned here from its founding in 1824 to the penal colony’s closure in 1839.

It also irrevocably changed the life of the Aboriginal peoples on whose Country the colony was built. This exhibition offers a rare chance to view the few remaining official documents from the Brisbane penal colony. These original registers, maps, drawings and Book of Trials are listed on the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register and treasured by Queensland State Archives.

Life in Irons also features new artworks from renowned contemporary artist Danie Mellor and Brisbane sound artist Lawrence English.

The Panels: Brisbane City Wide Christian Business Breakfast & Workshops

There comes a time when, as a business owner, you just want to be able to ask other business owners the hard the questions about what life is really like as an entrepreneur for them.

Hence why we have put together this special breakfast and workshops giving you the opportunity to ask the hard questions in person.

During the breakfast we will have a panel of four women in business.

Deb Morrison – The Pet Cloud

Esther Swanborough – Swanborough Funerals

Bek Daley – I Hate Cooking

Simone Curran – Wynnum Manly Window Cleaning.

Each of these women have grown their businesses from scratch.

The first workshop we will have a panel of four men in business. Stay tuned for them as we finalise the panel.

The second workshop will focus on Spiritual Warefare in business. In every business there is always the practical and the spiritual aspects to deal with. Often when the practical is all in order and you are wondering why things are coming together, then there is a spiritual answer to this. This will be a highly practical session.

For each of these sessions we are going to give you the opportunity to ask your questions prior to the event so that we can sumarise them and give our panelists time to prepare.

The Purpose Of the breakfast & workshops:

When God wants to turn the world upside he turns to the business community. He chose Abraham, David, Amos and dare I say Rahab. When Jesus asked for 12 disciples, God gave him 12 business people. Those 12 went on to change the world.

A key to seeing the Kingdom of God expanded in Brisbane is unity. As we bring the Christian business community together, so it opens the door for the church as a whole across our city to gather. Each of these breakfasts is designed for you to learn, to be encouraged, equipped and mobilised to see God’s purposes for our city, state and nation fulfilled.

The breakfast is open to all no matter what “brand” of church you attend or do not attend.

Pastors bring your business people. Business people bring your Pastors. School Principals bring your business students. Gather a group of 10 from your church and register a whole table!

Sponsorship display tables are available so you can promote your business or organisation.

The timings for each event are as follows:

7 am Breakfast

8:30 am Breakfast concludes and half an hour of networking time

9 am – Workshop 1

9:50 am – Morning Tea & more networking

10:10 am – Workshop 2

11:00 am – Workshops Concludes – this would be an ideal time to schedule lunch with those who may be attending.

Why not bring a group of business people from your church or professional network.

A note about parking

There is plenty of parking available at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. But it does come at a cost.

The current parking rates are:

0-2 Hours: $15
2-4 Hours: $20
4-9 Hours: $30
Maximum daily rate: $30
Early Bird enter before 9am, exit between 3pm-6pm (Mon-Fri only): $16

As the breakfast and workshops go for more than two hours the parking costs can be quite high, hence why we are offering a $15 parking pass that can be purchased when you buy your tickets. On the day we will then give you the pass to exit the car park. Note: if for some reason the car park is full on the morning of the event, then we will refund the $15 to you.

Our Collection: Voice in Action

Emerging in the late 1980s, a new wave of vocal Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander activism placed Brisbane at the forefront of an urban art movement.

Drawing on the Museum of Brisbane Collection, Voice in Action explores the city’s unique socio-political climate during the 1980s and its impact on the rise of strong new artistic voices.

While artists from this period forged a global conversation which continues today, they have also played an active role in defining Brisbane. Artwork relating to contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues continues to prompt the re-evaluation of
local histories, perceptions of identities, and how we see ourselves and each other.

Artists featured include Vernon Ah Kee; Christopher Bassi; Richard Bell; Megan Cope; Leah King Smith; Vincent Serico and Judy Watson.

Clock Tower Tours

Enjoy the old-world charm of our Clock Tower tours. Step into the original 1930s hand-operated lift, travel past the Art Deco-styled clock face to arrive at the final, 64m-high platform for a bird’s-eye view of the city. There is a reason this has been a time-honoured tradition for Brisbane families for almost 90 years.

Tickets are free and allocated on a first come, first served basis. You can obtain a ticket in person on the day at the Museum of Brisbane reception on level 3 of Brisbane City Hall. Grand Designs: Walking Tour of City Hall and Roma Street Parkland

Learn the history, architecture and garden design of these two iconic Brisbane destinations in a winter walking tour of Brisbane City Hall and Roma Street Parkland.

Built between 1920 and 1930, the heritage-listed Brisbane City Hall is seen as the heart of Brisbane and has been the backdrop to many cultural, social and civic events. Roma Street Parkland offers a distinctly different experience, with designer gardens and sprawling lawns that wind around 16 hectares of stunning parklands. Well known by garden and plant enthusiasts for its exceptional horticultural standards, it is also a popular visitor destination, housing free barbeques, playgrounds and a year-round calendar of events.

Testimonial Buffet Dinner – DAVID CORMACK

Have you suffered hardships, broken relationships and failures?
Come and hear DAVID CORMACK, Barrister At Law and Chairman Prison Fellowship Australia (Qld). David was born in South Africa in 1969 at the height of apartheid, migrating here with his family in 1981.
David’s journey is blended with his father’s journey who experienced PTSD, alcoholism and workaholism from the gorilla war in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.
After coming to God in his teenage years, David’s faith went cold when his marriage failed.
His faith was revived when he volunteered for Prison Fellowship and saw men and women transformed by the hand God.

DonateLife Week

DonateLife Week raises awareness throughout Australia on the importance of registering your organ donation decision at www.donatelife.gov.au
Research shows that when you register your decision and have let your family know what you’ve decided, that 90% of the time your family will consent to donation. However, if you’re not registered and your family doesn’t know your wishes when you pass, then only 44% of families will consent to donation. With 1400 people on the transplant waiting list in Australia, it’s critical that we lift our 28% registration rate in Queensland to give those on the waiting list the best chance of survival.

Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition

An exhibition of Japanese flower arranging, together with demonstrations and hands-on classes. Ikebana is the ancient Japanese Art of Flower Arranging and has been practiced in various forms for centuries. The Sogetsu Ikebana School is a modern school. Road to Bethlehem

Road to Bethlehem is a walk-through story of the first Christmas when God sent His Son, Jesus, to be born to a young couple living in Nazareth. The story is told creatively through dramatised scenes in a way that captures the imagination of young and old, as they join the travellers making their way to Bethlehem to see the newborn king.

Come back in time, to the dusty roads and simple village life of Bethlehem. Meet the soldiers and walk among the people of that time. Experience the sights and smells, enter the drama, and witness the grace of God in giving His supreme gift to the world.

Over 3 nights, over 5000 will come through Road to Bethlehem this year. Bookings are free via the website in the week prior. At the gate tickets are limited.
