Gina Williams & Guy Ghouse in concert

Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse are one of those rare acts which connect and capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences through the power and pure emotion of song. They bring a fresh, modern take on ancient traditions; merging evocative sounds, poignant stories, rare language and that beautiful voice.

The songs and performances are informed by four principles; Koort (Heart), Moort (Family), Boodja (Land) and Koorlangka (Children/Legacy).

Gina is a proud Balladong (Noongar) daughter with links, through her grandmother, to the Gitja people of the East Kimberley. Her music is informed by an ancient Indigenous culture and she has drawn from a deep well of recent West Australian and an even deeper personal history.

Performing with the all-important blessings of her elders and her community, Gina and Guy will take you on a journey you will not get anywhere else in the world. And it’s one you are not likely to forget.

Mao’s Last Dancer the exhibition: A Portrait of Li Cunxin

Discover one man’s incredible journey from poverty to world-famous artist in this exclusive Museum of Brisbane exhibition. Mao’s Last Dancer the exhibition: A Portrait of Li Cunxin features never-before-seen interviews, performance footage and personal artefacts in an intimate portrait of a contemporary Australian icon.

Born into bitter poverty during the height of Mao’s Communist China, Li grew up in a world few of us can imagine. Through a chance of fate, at age 11 he was selected to attend Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy – a rare opportunity to escape his humble, rural existence. Inspired by the love of his family and determined to succeed, Li become an international ballet star and celebrity when his fight to stay in the United States with his new wife made worldwide headlines in the 1980s.

Li moved to Australia with his wife, Brisbane-born ballet star Mary McKendry, in 1995 to become a Principal Artist with The Australian Ballet. Today he lives in Brisbane with his wife and children where he is Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet. The exhibition brings audiences up to date with Li’s life in Brisbane today and the extraordinary impact he continues to have on the lives of so many within and outside the dance community.

Don’t miss this extraordinary story of personal resilience and the strength of love – Mao’s Last Dancer the exhibition: A Portrait of Li Cunxin will be on display at Museum of Brisbane from 1 December 2017 to 29 April 2018.

Every Day I Wait – Anne Scott Wilson

Artist Anne Scott Wilson draws on 30 years of live performance and exhibitions to explore the relationship between movement and meaning. Her works meditate on the years of strenuous practice and endurance dancers undertake relative to their brief moments of glory as a performer.
Scott Wilson studied ballet as a child in Brisbane. Her first performance was in Christmas in Storyland at Brisbane City Hall in 1960 and she was a member of Queensland Ballet before her family moved to Melbourne.
Her works integrate video, photography, performance, sound, and installation to immerse the viewer in an almost physical experience that elicits a sense of what it is to move like a ballet dancer –weightless motion camouflaging the often painful and arduous practice of ballet technique.

Hidden Imaginarium

Chantel Schott and Corrina McLaughlin have joined forces to showcase a fusion between our waking life and the subconscious mind in their exhibition, Hidden Imaginarium from 28 February at Aspire Gallery.

South East Queensland artist Chantel Schott and Northern Rivers region of NSW artist Corrina McLaughlin explore the concept of how the subconscious mind interconnects with a person’s inner self and their reality. Chantel’s work uses the automatism technique, prompting a spontaneous act crossed with a conscious and intentional result as a means to express the subconscious on paper, whereas Corrina’s work has an intentional viewpoint to depict the relationship between spirituality and finding the truth in her art expression.

The official exhibition opening is Saturday 3 March from 4-6pm at Aspire Gallery, 53 Kennedy Terrace, Paddington Qld 4064, refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend.

The exhibition will run from 28 February – 10 March, opening hours Wednesday – Saturday 10:30AM – 4:30PM.

Open Community Forum: Fair go for refugees and people seeking asylum

All community members are welcome to attend an ‘Open Community Forum: Fair go for refugees and people seeking asylum’ event, hosted by Amnesty International, Oxfam Australia, Mums 4 Refugees and Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

When people seek asylum, they, like all of us, need a home where they can live in freedom and safety. If any of us found ourselves vulnerable or in danger, we’d like to know that we could seek help and a safe place.

Successive Federal Governments have chosen to implement policies that deny the rights of people seeking asylum to a fair, transparent, accountable and timely assessment process.

As a result, many people are living in ‘limbo’ in our communities and in detention centres or faced with the threat of being forcibly returned to harm by our Government.

The forum will discuss the current situation of refugees and people seeking asylum, and the role of community members to get on the #RightTrack, in a constructive and solutions-focused way. #RightTrack is a grassroots, community owned and led national movement resourced by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

All community members are welcome to attend. Please bring along a friend or family member who is interested in finding out more.

Speakers and Q&A panellists:

Kon Karapanagiotidis OAM (CEO and founder of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre)

Mojgan Shamsalipoor (Young woman seeking safety in Australia)
with Jessica Walker (Convenor of Teachers For Refugees and People Seeking Asylum)

Pemba Amuri (Community Engagement and Organising Manager at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, refugee, Congolese pro-democracy activist)

Sally Dodds (Queensland Convenor of Mums 4 Refugees)

Additional speakers:

Rebecca Buttenshaw (Activism Support Coordinator for Amnesty International)

Emily Dowling (Community Campaigner for Oxfam Australia)

Following the speeches, an open Q&A session will be held for community members to ask the expert panel any questions they may have.

This is a free event.

Arrive at 1.30pm for 2.00pm start.
Forum finishes at 4.30pm, followed by refreshments until 5.30pm.

Matters become complicated with the arrival of the enthusiastic Tony and his sceptical girlfriend Jenny, who has joined him against her better judgement. In an effort to boost ‘camp spirit’, Neville decides that a communal barbecue is the order of the day….then things really start to hot up!

The Hills Players Inc has been presenting plays for over 30 years. A local group of thespians who show talent beyond their years. (We aren’t really that old…) This comedy is suitable for all ages and will tickle the funny bone of people who enjoy a good clean laugh.

Abbey Medieval Festival

In 2018, the 29th Abbey Medieval Festival brings you an extended program with more engaging personal experiences, more immersive family-fun and more active learning than ever-before.

This spectacular event serves as a vital fund-raiser for the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, in Caboolture, North Brisbane in fulfilling its vision of ‘enriching people’s lives through the stories created from our collection’.

The Middle Ages (7th-17th century) saw the flowering of art, architecture, science, and the dawning of the era of exploration. Through this unique annual celebration, the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology enables visitors across Australia and Queensland to co-create their own medieval experience in a highly engaging and immersive event that is proudly the most authentic in the southern hemisphere. Re-enactors, musicians and street performers from across Australia join in a dynamic display of life, pageantry and the drama of medieval Europe. The Festival includes two banquets, a week of children-focused activities at the ‘Kids Dig It! Medieval Family Fun’ week and a tournament weekend with displays of iron-clad warriors locked in battle and jousting knights on their magnificent horses. There is archery, dancing, music, games, crafts and a large medieval market. Visitors are encouraged to wear period costume to deepen their own personal medieval experience.
