Theology on Tap is a public space theology event that occurs on the second Sunday of each month. This month, we are joined by speaker Jared Power on the topic, “Resources for integrating Christian contemplation and activity in everyday life”.
Talk summary
In the fourteenth century the Augustinian Canon, Walter of Hilton, wrote, “Thou must understand that God is served by three kinds of life, as either by an active life, or by a
contemplative, or by a third, that is mixed of them both, and therefore commonly called a mixed life.” Treatise Written to a Devout Man by Walter Hilton ed. Harry Plantinga, 1995, 7
(public domain). We all live mixed lives to some degree in which contemplation informs our activity. That said, proponents of an intentionally mixed life, at least anecdotally, sometimes find insights and convictions that flow from contemplation difficult to translate into the complex arenas of family life, friendships, and life in the public square. In this presentation, Jared explores some biblical and theological resources for connecting Christian contemplation with activity in each of these spheres of life.
