With over a billion listens on TikTok and featured on social media by notable names such as Gal Gadot, ‘Counting My Blessings’ has gone viral.
Seph Schleuter is an Ohio born singer songwriter who after giving his life to the Lord in high school, joined Damascus Catholic Mission Campus a worship leader, eventually becoming their Worship Director.
After his worship songs started to grow traction in the Damascus and Catholic community and after he reached out to artists and music labels, at the urging of his friends, he eventually heard back from Phil Wickham. Fast forward to now, Seph has released his debut EP, Counting My Blessings, a collection of songs filled with Seph’s organic pop sensibilities and relatable lyrics that speak to his all-consuming love for Jesus.
96five’s Tim Bain spoke with Seph about the impact and reach of his song, ‘Counting My Blessings’.
“It’s crazy to see, you know, the, the amount of people it’s impacting and the places it’s impacting” Seph said.
“A couple weeks ago, Gal Gadot, the Wonder Woman actor, like she posted a birthday thing for her husband and was using the song for it. It’s wild to see where the song has gone and in so many different ways.”
Seph emphasises that the universal theme of gratitude is what makes his song stand out.
“Everyone has things they’re grateful for and gratitude helps relieve anxiety and depression.”
“The song is so neat because anyone can resonate with it. Gratitude is something everybody can experience and has experienced and can relate to.”
The success of Counting My Blessings led to a first time nomination and win for Seph Schleuter at the 11th annual K-LOVE Fan Awards.
“I think for me it’s so special because it’s the only Christian award that is voted entirely on by the fans, you know?”
“Cause it’s like, hey, this is impacting people enough that they want to go vote and support the song. And it’s not just a couple of people making the decision of what song is best or whatever”.
Along with an obvious talent for songwriting, Seph also revealed his hidden talent (Irish Dancing) and shared his love of gifts and celebrating birthdays with his favourite meal as a kid: Doritos, Donuts and Sushi.
