Drones will take to the sky as part of a new Coles home delivery service next week.

The supermarket giant has partnered with drone delivery company Wing, which will see customers able to receive groceries delivered by air.

From Wednesday 2 November, customers in the Gold Coast suburbs of Ormeau, Ormeau Hills, and Yatala will be able to receive delivery in minutes, directly from the Coles store at Ormeau Village Shopping Centre.

The service will gradually expand to include other nearby suburbs, delivering 500 of the most popular Coles grocery items including bread, fresh produce, convenience meals, snacks, health care items, and household essentials.

Wing says that once a customer’s order is packed into a sealed container, it will be placed into a 1.3 metre drone capable of reaching speeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour; meaning the delivery will be complete within minutes.

The new delivery service comes after successful pilot programs in Logan and Canberra.

Coles Chief Executive eCommerce Ben Hassing said drone delivery was the next evolution in delivery technology and will support Coles’ ambition to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket by reducing the number of trucks on the road.

“We are passionate about finding innovative ways to help our customers to shop with us and we aim to deliver anytime, anywhere, anyhow shopping,” Mr Hassing said.

“By partnering with Wing, we’re able to offer our online customers another convenient option to purchase the Coles items they know and love and get them delivered straight to their door.”
