Many people across the city were filled with good cheer as they caught up with friends and family and relaxed over Christmas and New Year. At the same time, there were also plenty who were doing it hard as they battled grief, illness, loneliness or fear.

It’s these people in desperate need of comfort and hope that 96five strives most to
reach. And it’s thanks to friends like you who gave towards the 60-day Summer
Challenge that we could be more than words to listening friends like Selina.

Selina lost her 17-year-old son in a tragic accident in December, and she recently emailed 96five to share her heart. The following is published with her permission:

“I have been a listener for more than 10 years now. But this morning is the
first time I’ve listened to the radio since the afternoon of Monday 3rd
December.

We were woken by the police in the early hours of the 4th December, who
advised us that our 17-year-old son had passed away in Fiji hours before.
This past month has been our darkest, as you can imagine.

This morning was the first time I could bear to have background “noise”
and amazingly the first couple of songs played on 96five were songs used
in Harrison’s video/photo tributes at his funeral.

Then just when I most needed it you played a song I hadn’t heard before,
called “The Hurt and the Healer” by MercyMe. The song has stayed with
me all day and I just wanted to thank you for all you do for those in pain –
the walking wounded of Southeast Queensland. A song may not sound like
much, but it has helped more that I can ever express and I know it will
play its part in leading me further on my grief and faith journeys.

Thank you for the music you play, and for being the Life-giving people you
are. God bless all of you. I have always given thanks to God for this
blessed radio station and the ministry you perform and provide. You truly
make a difference in people’s lives in big and small ways.”

Thank you so much for standing with 96five over the summer period. It’s because of
you that our music and words are able to convey hope and encouragement to people
like Selina. She and her family have a long way to go in their journey of grief, and it is
great to know that 96five can be there for them and others in similar circumstances
24/7.
